Review: My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century by Rachel Harris

image: goodreads
Publication Date: 11th September 2012
Published by: Entangled Teen
Pages: 260 pages in paperback.
Source: My own paperback copy.

On the precipice of her sixteenth birthday, the last thing lone wolf Cat Crawford wants is an extravagant gala thrown by her bubbly stepmother and well-meaning father. So even though Cat knows the family’s trip to Florence, Italy, is a peace offering, she embraces the magical city and all it offers. But when her curiosity leads her to an unusual gypsy tent, she exits . . . right into Renaissance Firenze.

Thrust into the sixteenth century armed with only a backpack full of contraband future items, Cat joins up with her ancestors, the sweet Alessandra and protective Cipriano, and soon falls for the gorgeous aspiring artist Lorenzo. But when the much-older Niccolo starts sniffing around, Cat realizes that an unwanted birthday party is nothing compared to an unwanted suitor full of creeptastic amore. Can she find her way back to modern times before her Italian adventure turns into an Italian forever? (source: goodreads)

My Thoughts

Amazing debut work that completely sucked my me in with amazing and relatable characters, well thought story and the way it was written.

STORY: Told from main character's- Cat Crawford- point of view, which begins with Cat's plans of skipping her own Sweet Sixteenth bash. She is visiting
Florence with her dad and soon to-be stepmom Jenna who is planning her huge birthday bash here. On her first day in Florence she goes to explore the city on her self and little did she knew that her simple exploring and her curiosity to enter a gypsy tent will lead her to the early sixteenth century florence- Renaissance Firenze.
Here in Renaissance she has a new name-Patience- and her 16th century family where she finds a big brother in Cip and a sister cum best friend in bubbly Less. And with entry of the flirtatious Lorenzo, shrewd Niccolo and mean Antonia combined with the big unwanted ball and forced marriage proposal Cat experiences her very own sixteenth century adventure.
As the story proceeds it takes us on a rollercoaster ride of first kiss, highs and lows and Cat's funny and filled with mistakes struggle of adjusting to the mannerism of sixteenth century.

CHARACTERS: Rachel created amazing and loveable characters. The main character Cat being a daughter of a famous Hollywood director is expected to be like every star child but she is not. She yearns for normalcy and loved to stay out of spotlight, doesn't like big parties and has never fall in love UNTIL she meets Lorenzo. And as the story unfolds we are introduced to freaky and secretive gypsy Reyna; Cat's sixteenth century family comprised of her uncle, full of exuberance love care and lots of smile her Aunt, shy bubbly Cat's confidant sister cum best friend 'Less' and the man of few words protective brother 'Cip'. Further we are introduced swoon worthy, my latest hot book guy crush and famous flirt of his century Lorenzo, you can't try not to fall for him.
And with the adequate blend of few sly and mean characters we get a perfect dose of drama.

MY VIEWS: I loved Cat's journey very much. It was not at first sight or at first chapter, it was slow and gradual such that by mid of the book when I had to keep it down to get some sleep I couldn't keep it down and then I realised I was completely sucked in and can't wait to know what happened further. It was my first time travelling novel and it was perfect Rachel created the historical era mixed with Cat's contemporary mannerism. It felt amazing to learn lessons which Cat learned during her journey, they are important and a must for many. Rachel told the story in such a way that I felt I was there with Cat during her high and lows, I was cursing the cunning characters, at times I wanted to give a tight hug to Lorenzo and Less and wanted a big brother like Cip for myself.
The ending was ah!!! I don't what to say but I am happy that I already have Book 2 with me otherwise I would have gone mad waiting to read what happened next.
In all it a light funny read filled with flirty romance and some drama.

Thank you Rachel for my first and favourite time travelling book and for the amazing description of the Florence, now I have one more place on my list which I wish to visit.

I give this book 5 out of 5.
